This morning, The Chamber President, Dr Erick Rutto paid a courtesy visit to the Ambassador of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to Kenya Mr. Boumediene Mahi. The purpose of the meeting was to deliberate on boosting trade and investment between the Two Countries.

Dr. Rutto acknowledged the trade imbalance between Kenya and Algeria and expressed the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (KNCCI) readiness to work with the embassy to address this issue. They intend to take Kenyan businesspeople to Algeria to explore business opportunities.

Ambassador Boumediene Mahi pledged his commitment to promoting trade between the two countries and assured that Algeria would provide high-quality products at competitive prices. They expressed interest in partnerships related to cashew nuts, coffee, tea, and electronics manufacturing.

His Excellency also mentioned that Ethiopian Airlines plans to initiate flights to Algiers in the coming months, which could improve connectivity between the two countries.

This will be done through;

  • Actualization Joint Business Council (JBC) which will facilitate discussions and collaborations in several key sectors, including pharmaceuticals, agriculture, mining, food processing, and building materials.
  • Invitation to Kenyan businesses to participate in the National Trade Fair in Algiers, which showcases various products from Algiers.
  • A Joint Economic Commission involving ministers from various sectors, including mining, tourism, fertilizers, agriculture, electronics, ICT, and financing. This platform will allow for in-depth discussions and collaborations.

Chamber President Dr. Rutto mentioned Safaricom’s interest in expanding its operations in Africa and suggested that M-Pesa, a mobile money service, could be a valuable solution for Algeria.

In Attendance: The meeting was attended by several key individuals, including KNCCI National Director Hussein Jama, Vishal, Ms. Lucy Muchoki (Head of Partnerships and Programs), Judah Kioko (Chairman Makueni Chapter), Elisha Kiplagat (KNCCI member), and members of the Secretariat.
